Irish 2000 Guineas winner Phoenix Of Spain has served both Roger Varian & ourselves so very well, jointly with the exploits of Bobby Bennu (Timeform rated 104) and Roger himself with Cambridgeshire runner up Indalo and the now Group 1 performer Lady Of Spain, so when we purchased this colt for 110,000gns we immediately picked up the phone and asked Roger if he would care to train him? - “I’d be delighted to” - was Roger’s reply: “I actually had him vetted and was keen to buy him myself”, continued Roger.
Plenty of shrewd judges came up to us afterwards and said what a gorgeous horse we’d bought and that they had pangs of jealousy. Obviously, we’d concur.
He’s from a fabulous family, and the mare has already produced horses rated 86 & 94 - both 2-year-old winners. Her being a dual 2-year-old winner herself augurs well. The grandam, a dual 2yo winner including the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes no less & the great grandam, a dual winner at 2yo, including the listed 5f St Hugh’s Stakes at Newbury, demonstrate the family’s precocity. There’s every reason to believe he’s very much a mid-season 2yo; however, his great physique, with presence, scope and a fabulous walk, suggests he’ll be fully effective as a 3yo and beyond too.
The sky’s the limit with this chap - potentially a top-class horse with, most definitely, a top-class trainer.

Our owners absolutely loved him during the popular 2-year-old parade in Middleham on Sunday, 18th of January, and we can see why. Listen to Tim's thoughts on our stunning son of Phoenix of Spain.
Richie reports that he has settled in really well. He has completed the early stages of lunging with one and two reins, stopping and starting on command, and is now long reining around the farm and in the arena, learning the turning aids. There is a short video of him below long reining from a different angle.
