Race entries

He is currently enjoying his time up in Middleham, North Yorkshire, during his summer holidays:

A very close 2nd on his racecourse debut in a bumper over 2m, his ultimate calling will be over fences, something we cannot wait to see. Under Paul's expert tutelage, the world is really his oyster. He is currently enjoying his summer holidays (see a picture of him below at Ann's ), and we can't wait to see him over hurdles next season.

The official point-to-point review of his very taking debut is as follows: “The Gem State made a highly promising debut when finishing runner-up in a competitive 11-runner four-year-old maiden at Rathcannon. Sent off favourite, the son of Idaho travelled strongly in mid-division before making smooth headway to lead two out. Headed before the last, he kept on well to the line to finish a two-length runner-up. This was a fine introduction, and he looks like a smart type with every chance of going one better next time.”

The now 5yo gelding, HANDIN MANYPOCKETS, the horse that finished 3rd in the Rathcannon P2P where The Gem State finished 2nd, was beaten only 9.5 lengths into 4th place in a 2m4f maiden hurdle at Cheltenham’s, recent New Year’s  Day meeting, on his rules debut, having been purchased for 55,000gns at the same Cheltenham November sale as The Gem State.

To add a bit of context to the gallop, the horse with the light grey jacket we gallop upsides with cost £215,000, so just short of three times our cost, the horse on the far side of the leading pair was a £200,000 purchase who finished 2nd in a P2P behind a very well regarded horse and the horse on the near side of the leading pair was a 100,000 euro store purchase who then won a point to point (so that horses value would now be comfortably double the 100 paid as a "baby").

So, if you're just assessing costings against what has been achieved there, we've more than excelled ourselves.

He clearly has an engine, and Paul would like to think that he should be very competitive in a bumper when the time is right.

Listen to a very delighted Paul Nicholls after securing the colt with Top Agent Anthony Bromley and Tom Palin:

Grade 1 success for young, up-and-coming sire IDAHO.
