Winner 97 of 2026: WICKSEY, trained by Ben Haslam and ridden by Richie McLernon. The ‘Sticky Toffee Pudding Juvenile Hurdle’ over 2m1f at Cartmel.

There is a saying in racing that sometimes 'patience will be rewarded'. Now, in the case of Wicksey, his owners have been rewarded bucketloads, as he not only won an All-Weather Bonus earlier in the year, but also sits at the top of the leaderboard for the most winning MPR horse of the current season.

Having not troubled the judge as a 2-year-old, he has won three consecutive races on the flat and remains unbeaten over hurdles.

Wicksey settled just behind the leading pairs under Richie McLernon, found himself in a lovely rhythm, and his jumping was much improved since his last outing. Not much changed throughout the race, aside from an incident early on when the market leader ran off the course.

With the leading horse still travelling well, our son of Expert Eye had to be brave when turning for home and the gap appeared between horses. He stuck his neck out, pinged the last fence and from there it was all over, and Wicksey extended to an impressive 5-length victory.

A fantastic victory from our genuine and willing 3-year-old, now MPR's most winning horse for the season. Huge well done to Ben, who has worked his magic, and of course all his owners.
