We think the phrase 'a trainer for all seasons' perfectly sums up the prowess of Mick Appleby; both in terms of the time of year his horses achieve, but also, that he is just as suited to sprinters as with middle distance Flat performers. Furthermore, Mick is particularly adept at improving other trainers' horses to achieve at the highest level, both in terms of Heritage handicaps and Group races to boot. You only have to look at some of the horses Mick has improved no end, such as the talented Big Country, the top class Danzeno and the super-fast Caspian Prince, all big festival and Saturday winners on the turf, during the recent Summer turf seasons. However, lest we forget, Mick was crowned Champion All Weather Trainer for the 2017/2018 AW season with a plethora of Winter winners at all the country's sand-based tracks. He's very adept at foreign sorties to plunder big Group races around Europe, on both turf and artificial surfaces.
Here we have very fast and improving sprinter in the form of AIRSHOW, who we've just purchased from the 2018 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale in Newmarket for 42,000gns. He ought to fit in perfectly at Mick's yard because he too is superbly versatile re season and underfoot surface. He loves to bowl along in his races and Good to Firm ground and All Weather appear to come alike. We believe, he could be seen to particularly good effect on pace biased tracks, such as Chester, Epsom and York. To date, his turf runs have principally been on straight galloping tracks i.e. Leicester, Newbury, Newmarket July and Windsor.
He's by the top sire SHOWCASING and remains only a 4yo. Showcasing has demonstrated with the likes of Advertise and Quiet Reflection that he can sire Group 1 winning performers at Sprint distances. Given Airshow is still going to be a very young sprinter even as a 4yo in 2019 (most sprinters do not peak until they are 5 or 6yo) there remains a huge potential, with our super looking gelding, for improvement over the next two or three seasons to race.
We can see Airshow performing at all the top racing festivals around GB and Ireland, affording his owners numerous memorable days at the races. With just a small amount of continued improvement, so regularly eked out by Mick and his team with their acquisitions, Airshow could be being added to the roll of honour and hall of fame, of some of the most fashionable Heritage handicaps and just possibly conditions, listed and Group races; wherever the races befit.
His former trainer Rod Milman added prior to the sale: "A smart progressive sprinter that has proved particularly adept on the AW, recording form figures of 3112. On his most recent start he was caught on the line at Kempton by a subsequent winner in Polybius. He is unexposed on the AW and could be an ideal candidate for the very valuable AW Championship Series."
Watch his first win on the AW at Kempton here, described as "a really taking performance": http://www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/video/20180413/2777152/16597879
Trainer Update (18th August): Airshow ran a fantastic race at Chelmsford to finish a close up 4th, and is really coming to hand now. He looks set to be winning races between now and the end of the season. We will keep him going over the Winter too, on the AW. He’s still very young for a sprinter at the age of 4yo and given he’s very low mileage on the clock, he looks destined for a long, and possibly illustrious career for MPR.
