Purchased at the Tattersalls Cheltenham January Sale, we are thrilled to welcome multiple Grade 1 winning trainer COLIN TIZZARD to #TeamMPR, with this young exciting son of Mount Nelson.
NELSONS ROCK made a very favourable impression when winning his four-year-old maiden at Tinahely back in October, getting off the mark at the third time of asking and the five-year-old once again returned to the scene of his four-year-old success to record back-to-back successes for Wexford-based handler Mick Goff. The bay gelding made much of the running in the second half of the contest under a positive ride which saw him press on over the downhill fences on the final two circuits to increase the tempo. Once meeting the hill in the home straight on the final circuit, he kicked clear and was soon in command, ultimately crossing the line with eight lengths to spare. See the race video in the gallery.
The Racing Post were suitably impressed too (the link to his Racing Post profile is included on this profile page.) He’s been awarded a Racing Post Rating, for his 8 lengths victory in his 'Winners Of One' race, of a very tasty 92. Given the likes of Bacardys and Topofthegame (both subsequent Grade 1 festival winners) were awarded ratings of 93 and 94 respectively for their Point To Point victories, you can clearly see the sort of impression Nelsons Rock has made.
Out of a five-time winning mare Neardown Beauty, who is a half-sister to five-time track winner El Senador, this son of Mount Nelson seems to be a versatile gelding, who looks to have the potential to develop into a smart track performer that can further add to this winning family.
He’s looks an exceptionally bright, young prospect, for the Tizzards to work their magic with. The plan is to run him in bumpers this autumn and of course, his career ‘proper’ will begin in the Winter, as the sky could be limit, once using his jumping assets, that he’s clearly shown, in his two time winning, Point To Point career.
Please see his photos and videos in the gallery.
He was ready to make his Bumper debut in the spring, but then the lockdown was introduced, so he probably would have won that by now! Now back in from a break, it's all systems go!
Syndicate Manager Update (31st August): "Colin and the team are delighted with how he has summered (some new photos of him are in the gallery.) He is now back in work and we’ll get him in a bumper in September, before looking at going hurdling with him. I caught up with Colin and Joe at Doncaster sales this month and they were very excited about getting him back. Just before the halt to racing Joe rode him himself to see what there was there and he was delighted with him and is expecting him to be a very smart horse. He's already a DUAL point to point winner so as you can imagine we are very excited about seeing him on the course."
Here's a video of him cantering away:
