Purchased at the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale, this colt is by SERGEI PROKOFIEV. This sale has proved to be a happy hunting ground for us, as we purchased our Group 3 winner and Weatherbys Super Sprint winner EDDIE'S BOY (also trained by Archie) here.

Based on the stallion phenomenon’s that are SHOWCASING & HAVANA GREY (both Whitsbury Manor Stud sires), Whitsbury’s, latest, freshmen sire incumbent, SERGEI PROKOFIEV - son of the great Scat Daddy - has met with serious appeal, across the racing industry, as his progeny are presented for sale. His offspring are ALL ‘of a type’, a “good size, good walking, speedy looking 2yo for 2024”. Nobody can seriously claim to be able to judge which freshman/first season sire will make the grade, however, we’ve been pretty accurate in such predictions, most notably Dark Angel, back in the day, and latterly, Havana Grey. Havana Grey looks like he’s the most exciting new sire out there, very possibly an ‘elite sire’ in the making. Sergei Prokofiev could easily be the next in line, we’d suggest!

At MPR, we’ve done pretty well with sons and daughters of first season sires; we loaded up with Havana Grey two years ago - Eddie’s Boy, Cuban Mistress, Maylandsea. A few moons ago we bought the very first ‘good’ Dark Angel in Lily’s Angel and it’s fair to say that progeny of a very successful first season sire, can look exceptional value 12 months down the line. In the racing game, you have to have very deep pockets to follow fashion, and we’d challenge, that in so doing, it’s not the best spend of one’s hard-earned pound. We’ve alway remained pragmatic at MPR, operating in the Middle Market, hunting for value. We’re very hopeful we’ve struck the right note here.

There’s very little compromising with this fellow, he’s a lovely individual, strong, and moves fantastically well, he carries himself beautifully. The mare’s on record as having produced some very talented performers and he’s come in perfectly well, on budget (for a fair bit less than we thought we may have to pay). At 38,000gns he’s a similar price tag to our Archie Watson trained EDDIE’S BOY (45,000gns) and a little north of the initial purchase price of another of our Archie Watson inmates, BRAVE EMPEROR (£19,000). They’ve both done us proud, winning a mere few Group races, between them!

You’d struggle, is our opinion anyway, to find a better-balanced package than, this colt, this price tag & this trainer, to go to war with next season. He has all the attributes of an April or May debutant, with genes and physique that could take him to any or many of the major summer festivals in 2024. Very reminiscent of the Eddie’s Boy scenario of two years ago, we’d love to think he could emulate his exploits - we’d love to rekindle, or even better, Eddie’s 3rd place in Royal Ascot’s, Listed Windsor Castle Stakes.

He’s a definite candidate too, for next year’s £100,000 & £150,000 6f Newmarket Sales races, for which, graduates of this sale, along with those of Book 3, exclusively qualify. He’s speed on speed, ideal for the challenges of those 6f Newmarket races next August and October respectively.

At 38,000gns, he comes in, on perfect qualification budget for the £300,000 Newbury Weatherbys Super Sprint next August, a race we won with Eddie’s Boy in 2022, no less. Furthermore, he’ll be suited to a race like the £250,000 Listed Redcar 2yo Trophy given his sire’s sensible Median Price tag - it’s a race where the weight you carry is determined by the median price of your sire - the more fashionable your sire, the more weight you carry. He’s a contender, at this stage, on paper, at least.

Of course, don’t rule out his being a proper Group horse too, he’s got the precocity in there to achieve early and achieve big, if things go well. If he were to emulate Eddie’s Boy and earn £300,000 in 2yo prize money and sell for a cool 320,000gns, then we’d suggest out pragmatic approach, with Archie steering the ship, has proven successful, once again.
