In Norse, the meaning of Oscar is 'Divine Spear' - the Divine Spear is a legendary holy spear, the tip of which is said to penetrate all defences. This gelding has a superb National Hunt pedigree; bred to be a thorough staying type, 3 miles plus in testing conditions are his natural territory. Nicky is a huge fan of the sire, with Oscar responsible for the likes of Big Zeb, Rock On Ruby, Lord Windermere, Peddlers Cross, At Fishers Cross & Teaforthree. The dam, Testaway, has produced several progeny so far who were all multiple NH winners, including Jadanli who saw off Tarquinius to win the Grade A Thyestes Chase.
He won his bumper at the first time of asking and was incredibly consistent over hurdles, winning twice, at Ludlow and Fontwell. Fences were what he’d been waiting for and came out last season with a flourish, winning his first two chases, at Catterick and then memorably at Ascot.
Syndicate manager update (25th November): A big, old fashioned jumper, he stands at around 17.0h. We didn’t have him right during the first half of last NH season, but he was in the process of running a massive race in the Topham Trophy over the Grand National fences in April, when coming down 4 out. His jockey that day James Bowen, was convinced, in his post-race debrief, that he was coming to “at least place,” had he not fallen. He’s entered for the 2m5f £80,000, Grand Sefton at Aintree’s 7th December meeting, and all roads lead back to Aintree for The Topham, in the Spring of 2020. He’s a festival horse for this season and beyond.
