Firing in the Winners

Wed 13 Mar 2024

WINNER 17 OF 2024: ZIGGY'S MISSILE, trained by Robert Cowell and ridden by Luke Morris: The 'Boost Your Acca At BetMGM Handicap' over 5f at Southwell.

Reunited with Luke - they are a partnership that won over 5 furlongs last time out, on February 26th, at Wolverhampton.

There was a little bit of drama before the race as Ziggy had pulled a shoe off and the blacksmith on course was having difficulty replacing the shoe. Obviously, we wouldn’t have been able to run without a front shoe but eventually they did get it back on and he then went calmly down to post, a little later than the others.

As the gates opened, he fly leaped and ducked right, but soon got into his stride and in touch with the leaders. He was still going easily 2f out, as every other jockey started to push their mounts along. Ridden to make his move, he made good headway to take the lead in the final furlong; running on to win comfortably, by 1 and 3/4 lengths.

Luke said in his Sky Sports Racing interview: "I have always really liked him, from riding him as a 2yo. He has done really well from 2 to 3 and is a nice big imposing horse. He's still a bit raw but I'm sure that once he gets everything together he can develop into quite a nice sprinter and he can continue to rise up through the ranks."

Timeform rated it as a t85+ performance, saying: "Improved again and produced a most impressive display, still not the finished article but essentially far too good for this field; reared leaving stalls, in touch, travelled fluently, led over 1f out, hung left but soon clear, comfortably; he's got a useful sprinting pedigree and will be hard to deny in hat-trick bid."

Syndicate manager Tim says: "Well done to his owners and thanks to Luke - again! He's a horse that we purchased from last year's breeze ups, who is rising up the ratings. As Luke said in his interview after the race, he's a colt who has matured nicely as a 3 year-old and seems to be improving. Robert and I have identified a race for his next start, which we passed on to his owners earlier and we look forward to some nice races as the year progresses.”

We will be attending the Breeze Up Sales once again in a months time: Starting at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale on the 15th April. The sale of course, where we purchased our GROUP 1 winner VENTURA STORM, and at their Guineas Breeze Up sale, our GROUIP 1 winner THE PLATINUM QUEEN was found!
