Breeze Up Sales Season is Here!

Sun 16 Apr 2023

This week, the Breeze Up Sales begin and our team will be attending all the upcoming sales both in the UK, Ireland and France as we aim to find our next Group 1 performer. Our foray to these sales last year, produced our Group 1 winner The Platinum Queen, Listed winner and Group 3 placed, Prince Of Pillo, as well as the Royal Ascot Group 2 Queen Mary 2nd, Group 3 and Listed placed Maylandsea.

That’s without even mentioning our pattern race record previous to that with the likes of Ventura Storm (St Leger 2nd and Group 1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club winner) and Donjuan Triumphant (Group 2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte winner and Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest, 2nd).

We have had some lucrative success stories from previous breeze up purchases; not just providing owners with winners but a tidy profit too. Here are six examples:

THE PLATINUM QUEEN - Trained by Richard Fahey. Purchased at the 2022 Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up sale for 57,000 gns. She won the Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye at Longchamp. Was 2nd in the Group 1 Nunthorpe, 2nd in the Group 2 Flying Childers and broke the 5f juvenile track record at Goodwood, earning £345,730 of prize money. She was sold at the Tattersalls December Mares sale in 2022, for 1,2000,000gns. A fantastic result for her syndicate!

VENTURA STORM - Trained by Richard Hannon, he was purchased at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up sale for 110,000gns. He won £327k in prize money, won a Group 1, a Group 3, two Listed wins & 2nd in the St Leger.) He was sold privately to race in Australia, for a high 6-figure sum.

DONJUAN TRIUMPHANT - Trained by Richard Fahey, he was purchased from the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up sale for 30,000gns. He won 239k in prize money (won a Group 2 and was 2nd in Group 1.) He was sold privately for another 6-figure sum, going on to win at Group 1 level.

SILKY WILKIE - Still in training with Karl Burke. We purchased him at the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze Up sale for 17,500gns. He is in the form of his life, putting in a career best Timeform rating of 115 last time out! He has so far won 6-times and has earned £113,000.

PRINCE OF PILLO - Still in training with Keith Dalgleish. He was also a Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze Up sale purchase; for €38,000. He has had 5 starts and had won 3 of them, including a Listed race, the historic Ripon Hornblower Conditions Stakes and was third in a Group 3 on his final start of 2022. He is rated 105 by Timeform and has so far won £44,500 of prize money.

DARK ACCLAIM - Trained by Marco Botti and purchased at the Goffs Breeze Up sale for £45,000, he ran for us for a season and a half, winning more than his purchase price in race prize money. He was rated over 100 and finished 4th in the Italian Derby, Group 2 on his final start for us, before being sold for 6-times his initial purchase price at the Goffs London Sale, for £300,000 in the summer of his 3yo career.

The Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale - is the first; starting on April 17th. It is Europe's premier breeze up sale and where we purchased our Group 1 winner VENTURA STORM. Every year the Breeze Ups produce Group horses, and many of those horses produce impressive breezes both visually and on the clock. Our team will be there casting their eye over them all! See a full list of the Breeze Up Sales dates below:

Tattersalls Craven: 18th-19th April

Goffs UK: 25th April

Osarus: 27th April

Tattersalls Guineas: 4th May

Arqana: 13th May

Tattersalls Goresbridge: 26th May

So we know what we are looking for and will have a budget in mind once we inspect the horses and watch them breeze.

Our Diretor of Racing, Tim Palin says: "We head into the Breeze Up's season looking to buy up to six new, carefully selected 2 year-olds. The first, the Craven Sale, has a traditionally strong market, so we will maintain our essence of looking for 'value'. A week later it is the turn of Goffs UK . This is the leading 2YO sale for Royal Ascot winners with seven in the last seven years including Bradsell and Perfect Power. The Tattersalls Guineas sale follows, where we hope to replicate our purchase of The Platinum Queen last year, for 57,000gns. We have in mind that our potential purchases could go to trainers all around the country. Budgets will vary - we could spend 17,500 gns (as we did for Silky Wilkie,) or we could spend 100,000gns (Maylandsea) and we can't wait!"
