Race entries

Training update (19th April): We saw him at our stable visit at the weekend. He flew up the gallops and looked tremendous. He is quite typical of a Starspangledbanner - always trying to please and go forward. He is a lovely big horse and looks like a miler in the making. Hugo is very happy with him - See a narrated video from him, below His race entries/declarations, will show on this page. (He has an 'early closing' race entry already in for later in his 2yo career.)

BIOGRAPHY:  A gorgeous, good sized, strong, and powerful colt who should be a reasonably early 2yo sort, given his very early birth date of 26th January 2022. An €85,000 purchase, on our behalf, by Mark McStay’s Avenue Bloodstock, the team that bought us the high-class son of Coolmore’s STARSPANGLEDBANNER, THE ROSSTAFARIAN, also trained by Hugo. We subsequently sold him to Hong Kong for ten times his purchase price and he is now renamed CHAMPION DRAGON. The same sire and trainer combination also, of our 2024 winners HOW IMPRESSIVE and SIOBHANBROGAN.

He’s the sort of horse who could be destined for 6f Group races next Summer, and he’d be a strong candidate for the Arqana Sales Race series 2024 which carry phenomenal prize money e.g., €160,000 and the likes to the winner. Furthermore, he qualifies for French Owner Premiums (see below, also) so lofty prize money hauls could easily be on the agenda.

Watch our colt's conformation video, here:

In addition, the way the bloodstock resale market currently sits, even if he were to only hit a rating of say 85, and we’d be far more hopeful that he’d stretch out to a rating of 105 by the way, his resale value at the end of a 2yo campaign or during his 3yo season, if in form, could be seen to realise £60,000-£80,000 - and that’s if things haven’t quite gone as well as we’d hoped. There’s some economic sense, these days, if horses’ careers and point of sale are managed carefully. With the advent of The Sunday Series, Shergar Cups, Racing League, Sales Races etc where the prize money pots are so huge, horses can earn vast sums of money by winning and placing in races that cater for horses in the slightly above average category.

We’ve bought him with becoming a Group racehorse in mind, at 2yo & 3yo, however, were he to fall just a little way short of that, there’s still plenty of huge prize money pots and fun to be had, either side of The English Channel. Even a maiden victory in France can earn owners circa €25,000 and as you will see on his attached pedigree page, he is related to our 15-time winner MENSEN ERNST.

For all that an €85,000 price tag might appear a little lofty, we think it’s a sensible spend, in the case of this particular individual.

As a significant point of interest, Mark McStay had 2 naps on Day 1, of arguably Europe’s Premier Sale of the year, with MPR in mind, and coincidentally they happened to be back-to-back lots, Lot 41 this Starspangledbanner colt and Lot 42 a Kameko colt. He valued them the same, in the circa €80,000 - €120,000 price bracket. In fact, he slightly preferred the former, Lot 41, which obviously we purchased, whereas Lot 42 sold for a whopping €310,000 no less. We’re pretty sure that our purchase would score very highly on any value for money rating, all things considered.

We’re thrilled to have him on board.

His racing name will be One Eye Jack. He is entered in the Class 2 WEATHERBYS SCIENTIFIC £300,000 2YO STAKES at Doncaster in September.
