Our MPR Bloodstock team arrived in Newmarket for the final yearling sale of the season with the intention of purchasing one further horse for our 2024 2yo roster and we were delighted to secure lot 141, a fabulous Earthlight filly to go to Richard Fahey. Believing we’d safely secured the final piece of our 2023 yearling jigsaw, our work in Newmarket was seemingly done.

However, low and behold, we learned that lot 175, one of our naps of the sale, was led out unsold at 38,000gns - we’d intended to bid on him with a valuation in the 70ks or even 80ks, but we’d secured our intended sole purchase earlier, ie lot 141. We couldn’t resist at those sorts of numbers so we approached the vendor to check on this colt’s availability and he said they’d just sold him to Charlie Johnston for 40,000gns. On the one hand we’d missed out, on the other hand, we decided, ‘let’s quickly approach Charlie to see if he has an owner for the colt or whether he was bought on spec?’ Fortunately he was purchased on spec, so we very quickly put our name to him. We couldn't possibly leave him behind for those sorts of numbers.

Watch his profile video, here:

He’s a fantastic value for money purchase. Originally he’d been prepped for the prestigious Book 1 Sale in October, but stepped on his manger and suffered a laceration, albeit a flesh wound, to his foot. As a result, he had to be withdrawn from Book 1 and represented, now the wound has healed, at this sale. It’s fair to say, that, were he to have Ben presented at Book 1, with its very cosmopolitan client base, with purchasers from all corners of the globe in attendance, he’d have made a whole heap more than the 40,000gns we’ve secured him for here.

He qualifies for the £25,000 Book 1 Bonus (having been catalogued) as well as the Ire €10,000 Incentive Bonus too. Were he to win a regulation, qualifying novice in 2024 he would earn north of his original hammer price. If the race happened to be at York, he could tally up as much as £50,000 for a single victory.

This colt’s pedigree is to die for, as he’s a full brother to two horses rated in excess of 100 and a half brother to a further 100 rated individual.

Buying him was a no brainer for us, and we hope you feel the same way.

*Catalogue Updates: Tuesday 14 November: Half sister: Bluebell Grove (IRE) (2021 f. by Blue Point (IRE)), placed once at 2 years, 2023.
