It’s distinctly likely that there were more fashionably bred horses, sold at Goffs Ireland Premium Yearling sales, held in early October 2019, than this colt, most notably a 3 million Euro Galileo, own sister to Alice Springs; however we’re convinced, from having viewed almost the entire 470 lots to go through the ring that week, that there was no nicer individual, nor mover than this fabulous Kendargent colt. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, of course, but we stand firm at MPR that this colt represented the best individual of the week.
Kendargent made a fabulous start to his time at stud and was one of the real breakthrough sires of 2012, from an initial nomination fee of just €1000, and he quickly became very fashionable, particularly in his native France. He remains the sire of precocious 2yo’s, such as Goken, but he seems to excel with progressive individuals such as Jimmy Two Times, Marando and Restiadargent. Now standing at €17,000, you can see the immense progress he has made, given the successes of his progeny on the track. Himself, a Group 1 miler, who enjoyed a little cut underfoot, he appears to be passing on 6f to miling prowess into his hugely successful progeny.
This “stunning” (a word, vastly overused in racehorse biographies) individual (but not misplaced in this colt’s case), is out of a Group 2 performing mare, who hails from a family laden with black type. In fact, he is a three parts brother to the Group 2 performers, in France, BATWAN and REVEDARGENT, which means three of their respective grandparents are the same. It’s a well renowned method, by breeders, to significantly increase the chances of breeding high class individuals, to revert to sending a mare to the sire of a successful progeny out of their own dam. In this case, Kendargent has now covered both Matorio and her mother Matwan. it’s worked twice, to bring about two black type progeny, so there’s every reason to believe it could happen on a third occasion, to the family.
Multiple Classic winning trainer Michael Bell singled this colt out as “the horse here, who I’d most like to take home,” so it’s not just MPR who have fallen head over heels for this colt, we’re in highly esteemed company in this regard, we’d suggest. Michael is a man for all seasons, so whether this colt turns out to be a Margot Did (Nunthorpe winner), a Big Orange (Ascot Gold Cup winner) or anything in between, such as Motivator (Epsom Derby winner) or Sariska (Epsom Oaks winner), this colt is in the safest, of safe hands, rest assured.
He’s a stunner, that appears to be the common belief and we are already counting down the days to his racecourse appearance. Please see a video of his walk in the gallery.

"Kendargent was the precursor for the revival of the French stallions and he has made his mark on French breeding." He has had his stallion fee raised on the back of his success. We’ve seen nothing, since purchase, to dissuade us from our opinion, that this colt could be destined to be a high-class recruit to the Middleham Park, 2020 and 2021, ranks.
Training Update (3rd January): After cantering away in December and getting up Warren Hill easily. Michael told us this morning: "He is a fine, easy moving colt who will revert to trotting during January with the rest of the two-year-olds. He's a very good looking and good moving horse - we should have some fun with him."
You can view videos of him in the gallery.
