Haydock - THE OLD BOSTON HANDICAP
(Class 2 Handicap)
We welcome aboard this high class recruit from France, already a Listed winner, but still only a 3yo, in Cold Stare. Sent to the mercurial trainer David O'Meara, who improves others' 'cast offs' for fun, we feel sure he will take us to all the top tracks around Europe in 2018 and beyond. At a time of the season when David's string are only just getting going, we sent him on the toughest of tough missions, to the Dubai Duty Free Greenham Stakes 2000 Guineas trial on April 21st. He's run an absolute blinder, behind the likes of James Garfield and Expert Eye.
We were really pleased with this Greenham run. He’s put in a career best to be beaten only 3 3/4 lengths by some of the top 3 year olds in the country. Martin Harley said afterwards that next time just allow him to bowl along at his own pace rather than restrain him back and he thought he could have finished closer if he was handier.
Big pot handicaps and potential further pattern races await this young and improving son of Intense Focus. He's just the sort of horse who reminds us of our previous David O'Meara stalwart PENITENT, in that he should improve as he matures.
Season update: The handicapper has dropped him to 95 and there are plenty of opportunities for him, as long as the ground isn't too quick, which we have found is the key to him. It’s a long season and he’ll be a nice fresh horse for when his ground comes.
