Al Khabeer, a son of LOPE DE VEGA is a thoroughly unexposed 3yo, formerly owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum. In his sole run at Newmarket late last season, given his stamina laden pedigree, he made hard work of keeping up with the protagonists through the race, over a mile. He’s bred to be destined to be significantly better than we’ve seen, once stepped up in distance.
He is PLUS 10 BONUS qualified. Read more here: https://www.plus10bonus.com/index.php#find-out-more__about
We have enjoyed an awful lot of success when purchasing very lightly raced horses from big training yards, given they have to sell numerous horses each and every year to make way for the new cohort of yearlings. Just occasionally, lightly raced horses who have shown form on the track, but not quite enough form to convince their current owner and trainer that they could prove able to win big races, slip through the big yard net. Recent examples of our inexpensive, lightly raced horse purchases from big yards and sent to David are: Penitent (40,000gns from William Haggas and Cheveley Park), who went on to win two Group 2's and be placed 2nd in the Group 1 Prix de la Forêt, at Longchamp on Arc Day. Tawdeea (11,000gns from Hamdan Al Maktoum) who subsequently won 4 races for us and £117,275 including the prestigious Old Newton Cup at Haydock. G Force (25,000gns from Richard Hannon) who won 3 races for us, including the Group 1 Haydock Park Cup and was crowned Champion 3yo Sprinter of 2014. Waarif (23,000gns from Hamdan Al Maktoum) who, purchased rated 82, moved up to a rating of 101. He has now won 7 races including the famous Carlisle Bell and his current prize money tally is just over £144,000. He's still going strong and has given his owners some great days!
David O'Meara has made a career out of training horses bought in from big yards and we feel that Al Khabeer is precisely, in our opinion anyway, the same horse as our 2019 purchase for David, in Southern Rock. He improved massively for us, winning 3 times and was sold on to race in Australia for almost 10 times what we paid for him. We announced our acquisition of Southern Rock at our David O’Meara Open Morning last spring, and he sold out, before the morning was complete and we expect Al Khabeer to sell quickly too!
Australia love to purchase mature stayers from England and we’d hope to replicate the Southern Rock model, with Al Khabeer. We should be able to race him either just this year, or this year and next and look to move him on, if and when, the interest from abroad, comes along.
