 Leo Tolstoy already knew that the two most powerful warriors are patience and time. WICKSEY, who tested some of our patience in the early part of his career, has most certainly paid back the time his owners afforded him in a great deal on Wednesday evening.

Andrew Mullen settled our son of Expert Eye towards the rear of the field, but always travelling comfortably amid his rivals. It was an even-run race at halfway, and at this stage, Wicksey had more horses ahead of him than behind. But as the field entered the long home straight at Newcastle, Wicksey travelled best of them all and made good headway inside the final two furlongs, before he kicked for home and quickly disputed the lead with less than half a furlong to go.

"It's all over, stop the contest!" was the reaction of the commentator as Wicksey powered to his maiden victory, winning by over 2 lengths, staying on well, which suggests he could stay further in time. Credit must go to Ben Haslam and his team, who did a great job with the lightly raced 3-year-old.

Timeform rated his maiden victory with a t62: "Showed much improved form to get off the mark making handicap debut after 10 weeks off, relishing the 2f longer trip and drawing clear in the style of one that could prove hard to beat under a penalty, this progress certainly not out of keeping with his attractive pedigree; held up, headway under pressure over 3f out, kept on well to lead 1f out, drew clear final 1f; will go on improving."
