Winner 23 of 2026: UTMOST GOOD FAITH, trained by George Boughey and ridden by Billy Loughnane. The ‘Read Meg Nicholls’ Blog at betmgm.co.uk Handicap’ over 7f at Wolverhampton.

Utmost Good Faith saw a 10-pound raise since his impressive win at Kempton, but we were hopeful and confident that our son of Starspangledbanner could overcome the raise in the weights and put up another good performance.

It was always going to be a tactical affair, with only four runners in the race. They all got to a very even start, and Billy managed to settle him into second place in the early parts of the race, before he took him to the head of affairs with 4 furlongs still left to race. Our extremely talented 3-year-old was still showing signs of greenness, but also evidence of a huge engine, when turning for home, as he slightly broke out to his right, but was well clear inside the final furlong to win by 3 lengths.

Timeform rated his hattrick victory with a t92: "Followed up from last time and continues to progress as he maintained his perfect start for current stable; chased leader, took strong hold, led after 3f, shaken up over 2f out, drew clear early in straight, hung right, kept up to work; things are going to start getting tougher, but he will go on improving."

Billy Loughnane's thoughts on our horse, certainly on the up: "That was a nice performance today. Again. He is still learning about the job, and he probably prefers going around the other way. He jumped out well, but was nice and relaxed and actually dropped the bridle, before the horse on his outer lit him up, and I just let him use his stride instead of fighting him. He won well in the end and is still improving. Exciting."
