Alex has the Thirst to Win

Sat 26 Jun 2021

WINNER 41 OF 2021: ICE COLD IN ALEX, trained by Ken Condon and ridden by Joey Sheridan (-5): 'The Brady Family Supporting Barretstown Handicap' over 7f at The Curragh.

The likeable 7 year old gelding saves his wins for the best days out, as yesterday, he lined up at The Curragh, on their first day of the Irish Derby meeting in a competitive big field handicap - a race he was 2nd in last year.

Drawn right in the centre, in 13, he settled towards the rear of midfield. Joey began to ask him for an effort at the 2 pole and it's then that we all pray for gaps to come for him. By the time they got to 1 furlong out, he had made headway and weaving through yet more horses, he chased down the leader inside the final furlong to take the lead and stayed on well, to win by 1 1/4 lengths.

In his post race interview with Ruby Walsh on Racing TV, Joey said: "He loves to run through horses, but you have to ride him for luck. They were going hard and it paid off for me. He was genuine and got me out of the hole I was in and kept finding for me. I'm very grateful to Middleham Park, the owners for the opportunity."

He earned his highest career RPR of 90 for this, his 5th win and Timeform gave him a race rating of 93, which is great to see.

Syndicate manager and part owner Charlotte says: "He’s been knocking on the door for a long while now and has run some fantastic races in defeat, so for him to get his head in front on such a big weekend at The Curragh, made it all the more special!"
