We can remember, only too vividly, the day that GRIZZEL, the dam of this fabulous colt beat, into second, our very own Clem Fandango, when taking the Beverley Hilary Needler trophy in 2016 both fillies were sharp and precocious, very talented and speedy individuals throughout their respective 2yo careers. Clem Fandango struck back, when the two met in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, three weeks later, yet it’s fair to say that both GRIZZEL and Clem were both very high up in the 2yo fillies’ pecking order of their generation. Both went on to earn further black type, including for GRIZZEL some Graded races the other side of the Pond. Back home in Europe for her breeding career, GRIZZEL (a daughter of the fabulous broodmare sire KODIAC - broodmare sire of The Platinum Queen amongst others) has already produced, from her first offspring to race, a 106 rated 6f horse (having cost just £35,000 through the ring) in keeping with her very own racecourse talents. Now sent to the impeccably bred Juddmonte stallion TIME TEST, she has now produced this sensational individual to boot, got us to savour.
There is not one word of a lie, when we, categorically, assert that this colt was “our nap of the whole GoffsUk Sale”. Our bloodstock team were simply ‘blown away’ on meeting him for the first time, and similarly, on a second viewing, the following day. Of course, he wasn’t the most expensive horse in the sale, the fashion lemmings decreed not, however, he was very much THE ONE we wanted to take home from the sale, without question.
Where better to send him then, than the former Champion trainer of Grizzel herself in Richard Hannon? - He knows the family inside out, of course.
Our colt qualifies for The Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot and we’ll work back from that, it’s a venue where both his mother AND his father plied their trade of course. He’s a quality stamp of a horse who deserves to frequent such places himself - we labelled him “the walk of the week” at the sales such is his quality of movement and stride.
Obviously, Harry’s Half Million could easily beckon too at York in August, so the £85,000 we’ve had to stretch to to secure his services, could prove a very lucrative stake, with over £500,000 on the table for the Sales’ race alone, come the next Ebor meeting. He reminds us a little of our Champion European 2yo TOORMORE, purchased from the same Goffs UK Sale as today (then named Doncaster Bloodstock Sales) in 2012 for just £36,000 - times have changed just a little since then in the bloodstock industry, but hopefully not too much.
Training Updates (2nd September): Find a walking video of him at Richie McGrath's (pre-trainer) below. Richie reports he has settled in nicely and he will start his "breaking in process" this week.
