Havana Grey ex Eleusis Colt
Newmarket - Tattersalls Somerville Auction Stakes (GBB Race)
We could easily be looking at one of the best examples of “value for money”, of the whole Breeze Ups’ season, with this beast of a son of new sire sensation; Havana Grey.
He is currently on course to be the most prolific first season sire in history, although it remains early days. At MPR, we can’t get enough of Havana Greys, we’ve 6 of his 2yo’s in total. 3, we purchased as yearlings and they’re now ALL winners on the track. All 3, head to Royal Ascot or other Stakes races around Europe in the coming weeks. Our other 3, this colt included, are Breezers and they’re all soon to be making their racecourse debut.
Here we have a gorgeous, loose moving light grey colt, this very strong individual, was merely held together, for well over half of his 2.5f breeze. He started his breeze off too keen unfortunately and his rider wasn’t able to ‘go after’ him and ask him to go about his business until he finally switched off after the first furlong and a bit. It took a further few strides to transition from slow down mode, to let’s go mode, so we only really saw the best of him at that point. He flew past the post and into the final gallop out area where he was one of the fastest timers.
Watch his breeze here:
We’ve found that Marco is so very adept at thinking outside the box, at the breeze ups, using his expert horsemanship, in sourcing horses that wouldn’t necessarily be on everyone’s radar, ie ones that don’t appear on the obvious fast timing horse lists that the majority of breeze up consignors and would be purchasers seem to be slaves to, these days. Such an approach from Marco, landed us the Group performer Dark Acclaim (4th for us in the Italian Derby, before being sold on for £300,000) at this very sale, for £45,000. Hopefully history is about to repeat itself.
This time we’ve a speedster on our hands, rather than a middle-distance colt. A brute of 2yo by Havana Grey (5f Group 1 winner) out of an Elnadim (July Cup winning) mare, he looks a mighty ball of speed. He’s very much, not just a 2yo, although it could easily be his best season. Time will tell. He has the size and scope to develop into a top-class performer, with his physique being an advantage, long term, rather than a disadvantage.
He just needs a couple of weeks holiday, and as with all Breeze Ups horses, he’ll need stalls training and preparation before we can race, however there’s no real reason why we can’t see him out this side of Royal Ascot. There’s just a chance that it may take 4-6 weeks to train that fizz out of him that disadvantaged him in the early part of his breeze, however, we’re talking about a small number of weeks delay, rather than months, even if that were the case.
His size, presence, huge raking stride and a reputed very high level of ability at home, should bode particularly well, especially as his exciting, brand-new kid on the block sire Havana Grey goes marching on, in leading the first season sires’ table. He looks excellent value for money, at this stage, anyway!
*He qualifies for, and we will aim him at, as a second half of the season target, the £100,000 Tattersalls Auction Stakes, which Marco won by 5 lengths in 2021, with his Tatsumaki. Our colt is set to carry a very competitive 8st 9lbs in the Newmarket race, set to be run on 22nd August 2022. *
Training Update: He has settled in well to his new home at Prestige Place. How pleased we are that we bought him, as his sire Havana Grey is firing in the 2-year-old winners (see below.) We have had seven 2yo's make their debut - 5 OF THEM HAVE WON! His race entries will show on this page.
