Purchased at the Goffs September horses-in-training sale, this lightly raced 3 year old gelding is by EXCEED AND EXCEL and heads to ROGER FELL.
We have a fabulous record of purchasing high class horses in training from large ownership outfits, namely our Group 1 winning G Force for just 25,000gns, our Group 1 placed Penitent for 40,000gns, our Old Newton Cup winner Tawdeea for 11,000gns and our top-class handicapper Waarif for 23,000gns. You could make a cogent case for suggesting our record is second to none, in this regard.
So, when we suggest we’ve unearthed another top-class individual, derived from the horses in training ranks, there’s every reason to believe we could be destined for the top handicaps at least in 2020 with this thoroughly unexposed son of Exceed And Excel.
Of course, Ustath’s career to date, has incurred a short hiccup, but we are firmly of the understanding that he is over his problem and with a further Winter under his belt, he should come back, in the form of his life for 2020. His authoritative, 6 lengths victory at Wolves in April, saw him go off favourite for the Dante Festival 3yo handicap (won incidentally by the MPR filly Wedding Date), however, Ustath ran no sort of race and was found to have a small problem after the race. He’s a full brother to the high-class FERNDALE and a half-brother to top class Saayerr and Ornate, so the genes are there, to improve to a rating, well into the 100’s. Our vets are very happy with him now and we’re already counting down the days until we see him on the track racing, as still only a 4yo in 2020, in the light blue silks of MIddleham Park.
He looks an out and out 5f and 6f sprinter, the sort of horse that reminds us of another HIT purchase Burnt Sugar, who won two Heritage Handicaps for Roger Fell and ourselves in 2018. We can envisage Ustath running in the top handicap sprints throughout the year, and hopefully winning one or two, all being well.
He looks a really exciting prospect with Roger Fell, at the helm.
Trainer update (10th January): Roger reports that he’s fine at home. He’s now back in off his break and he has started his preparations to get him ready for the turf season. He’s currently hack cantering around Roger’s gallop and he’ll step up to full cantering at the start of February. You can see a video of him hacking away in the gallery - he’s the last of the string with the 4 white socks.
