At the sales we've been asked by several owners if we'd be interested in buying a 'staying' horse. We thought if we're going to do this, we will do it properly, so we've called this project 'Operation Ascot Gold Cup'. We don't do things by halves!
At MPR we think one of the things we do well is to put the right horse with the correct trainer and that's why we've asked one of the best trainer of stayers in the country to look after this horse; none other than the legendary Sir Mark Prescott will train and the horse is a lovely big and scopey Archipenko colt. He is 'Plus 10' registered.
Archipenko was a very classy racehorse. He was a Group 1 winner along with five other Group victories. He has also made a fantastic start to his career as a sire and he has already produced a Group 1 winner in the shape of Madame Chiang. He also has G2 and G3 winners and other black type performers to his name. He is definitely a rising star in the stallion ranks and Sir Mark is a big fan as he has already had success with his progeny, including listed winner Time Warp.
The dam is called Nezhenka whom Sir Mark trained to win, so his experience of the family should stand us in good stead. She comes from a very successful family with bold black type right through the pedigree. This is her second foal.
We purchased the horse at Tattersalls Book 2 for 42k from Miss Kirsten Rausing who bred him-he is in fact the most expensive Archipenko of this sales season. As Miss Rausing is a long standing client of Sir Mark's, we feel we've got an incredible bargain and we know for a fact she was hoping to get in the region of 60k to 80k!
Sir Mark is undeniably an incredible judge of a horse and it's needs. It was on Sir Mark's advice that he be given some time 'at grass' to strengthen and develop over the spring. Sir Mark says "he has really grown and filled out; more so than you would expect. I am delighted with the horse's progress."
Latest Trainer Update: (16th Sept) We saw him recently at Heath House on an owners visit and he looked in magnificent shape (we have added a video of him on the gallops above). Sir Mark thinks he is now ready to make his debut, which is very exciting. His race entries/declarations will show at the top of this page, although the ground conditions will need to be right for him to be declared.
