Sultan Baybars is a lovely big gelding with a nice nice long 'lolloping' stride. His form was very strong when running over 7 furlongs and he was showing real speed in these races, using his long stride from the front which really seemed to suit. He could prove very hard to catch from the front round courses such as Musselburgh or Catterick; round a bend over 7 furlongs where he can really use his long stride with a positive ride and "catch me if you can" tactics.
The decision on which trainer to send him to was an easy one! David O'Meara has proven himself as one of the best trainers out there. He has done a fantastic job with similar types for us in the past such as Tawdeea who he took on with the same mark of this fella before improving him to mark of 106 and winning the £62k to the winner Old Newton Cup.
The races available to this horse should be plentiful and we should have plenty of fun with him. He has also won on the all weather which opens up that avenue for us too. His best flat form on the turf is also on varying ground from good to soft to good to firm, so that also bodes well for the amount of races that will be available to him and the amount we can run this fella.
Syndicate manager update: A frustrating, but fun individual. We thought about moving him on, such were our frustrations, but David retains a heap of faith in him and there is little doubt Baybars is seriously well handicapped. If Sultan can get into the swing of things this winter and next summer, he's the sort of horse who could rattle up a sequence. A year ago, the David O'Meara trained WAARIF appeared in the Black Friday offer (he'd been frustrating to that point) and look at him now; 20 lbs higher following 4 wins (two at Class 2, including The Carlisle Bell-in course record time!) and up to career earnings of almost £91,000 in prize money.
