Star Of Southwold
We purchased this good looking son of LE HAVRE ex INTO THE WILD (Great Journey) at the Arqana Deauville Yearling Sale. He qualifies for 'French premiums'. France is well known for its lucrative system of Owners’ premiums on top of already generous prize-money. On the flat, a 2 or 3 year old can earn an extra 64% on top of the race purse.
Ross Doyle, our bloodstock agent who bought him alongside Tim, describes him at "the mirror image of Toormore as a yearling. The under bidders at the sale were the actual owners of his sire, the exciting Le Havre, so they know a good Le Havre when they see one. His dam, Into The Wild has a pedigree stacked with black type; she's a half sister to a Group 2 winner.
We were determined to buy him, as he was by far the nicest horse in the sale, with an outstanding athletic demeanour and the most superb walk. He's very much in the mould of Dick Turpin, Trumpet Major, or of course our own Champion 2 yr old Toormore. He looks a lot like all three and will be a mile, or 10 furlong horse.
Syndicate manager update: An impressive winner of a Newmarket maiden in the Spring, this huge, impressive son of the mighty Le Havre, then appeared to lose his way at Richard Hannon's having finished 5th in the Listed Lingfield Derby Trial in May. We've moved him to the fabulous Mick Appleby yard and we're seeing a totally different horse at home now. He looks back to his best. He should have a very productive Winter on the all weather, given he's trained by last season's Champion AW trainer, but we will aim him for the £100,000 Old Newton Cup at Haydock in July and the £30,000 Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar in May. He remains a very exciting prospect, being only 3 years of age.
