Star Of Southwold
We purchased this good looking son of LE HAVRE at the Arqana Deauville Yearling Sale. He qualifies for 'French premiums'. France is well known for its lucrative system of Owners’ premiums on top of already generous prize-money. On the flat, a 2 or 3 year old can earn an extra 64% on top of the race purse.
Ross Doyle, our bloodstock agent who bought him alongside Tim, describes him at "the mirror image of Toormore as a yearling. The under bidders at the sale were the actual owners of his sire, the exciting Le Havre, so they know a good Le Havre when they see one. His dam, Into The Wild has a pedigree stacked with black type; she's a half sister to a Group 2 winner.
We were determined to buy him, as he was by far the nicest horse in the sale, with an outstanding athletic demeanour and the most superb walk. He's very much in the mould of Dick Turpin, Trumpet Major, or of course our own Champion 2 yr old Toormore.
Mick was crowned 2019/20 Champion All-Weather Trainer, for the third consecutive year and he really is hard to beat in this sphere!
Syndicate manager update (April 2020): He earned almost £70,000 in prize money in 2019 and given a similar programme in 2020, he could easily be in for something akin to that this year. A tough customer who loves to bowl along in front, he’s is a real oil painting of a horse. Given he’s such a huge individual, he could improve once again, even as a 5yo, this year. He looks set for another brilliant season. Loves the AW and having had a nice break now, since February, he has an entry in a valuable listed race in Sweden in May.
Here's one of his four wins last year - yet another Class 2 in the bag!: https://www.racingtv.com/videos/watch/horse_racing_replays/241123-lilian-thompson-best-mum-optional-claiming-handicap-2
