Purchased at THE sale for 2-year-old winners, the Goffs Premier Yearling Sale, this colt is by Coolmore studs REQUINTO, described as "Dansili's fastest 2 year old", you can read his full stallion details here: http://coolmore.com/stallions/requinto/
Generally speaking, at Middleham Park, we buy the very best pedigree that we can afford. It stands to reason that the stronger the genes the faster a horse can run, just so long as the horse in question can withstand training. There's a saying in racing that "you can't train paper," alluding to the fact that an unsound individual with a strong pedigree on paper, won't withstand training. So, it's always a balance of pedigree versus confirmation unless you have the sort of money that Coolmore and Godolphin possess, in which case you can afford both.
With this strong and sturdy son of Requinto we think we have just about got the balance right. He has a super page, being by a very fast Coolmore Stallion out of a winner producing mare who hails from a family packed with Group performers yet we have managed to secure a very sound and active individual too. As you can see from his photograph, taken at the sales, he is sturdy and robust yet in his video he really goes about his business with fluidity and relish. He looks to have a fabulous temperament.
We couldn't be more pleased with him; he's the sort of horse who will improve over the Winter too and he will no doubt progress on the racetrack. He has the strength to be racing early yet the genes to allow him develop as races open up over 6f and 7f. We hope we've got the balance right and he very much came in on budget too at the sales, which means he is eligible for all the big 'sales' races at Newbury, York, Doncaster and Redcar; they usually carry prize money of well over £100,000 to the winner. We ought to have plenty of great days racing with this fabulous son of Requinto.
Latest Trainer Update (1st Feb): We saw him at the open day where he did a swinging 3 furlong canter. His sire brings speed to the party and his dam brings stamina and he certainly looks to be following in dad’s footsteps as he caught the eye striding out very nicely when we saw him canter. Keith will step him up to 5 furlong canters during February. At the end of February he’ll decide which of his 2yo’s are ready for a piece of fast work to determine which ones will compete in the early 5f 2yo races.
