We and Richard Hannon have enjoyed plenty of success from our Doncaster Sales purchases over the years; most notably Group 1 winner Toormore, dual Group 2 winner Kool Kompany and Listed winner De Bruyne Horse and we think it’s because we apply the same theory, each time around, notably “let’s buy a nice colt and not worry too much about his pedigree.” The mantra has served us well.
Here, is the archetypal Doncaster yearling, that’s served us so well. We probably didn’t see a nicer individual than this colt, all week. He’s by a sire who is still making his way in the stallion ranks and out of a mare who has yet to produce a winner (from only one produce to race), although only a generation away, is the Champion filly SHIVA and horses such as Ulysses and Main Sequence nestle nicely into the pedigree, so our colt’s pedigree isn’t too shabby, it’s fair to say.
This son of Maxios, who was a multiple Group 1 winner on the track, is a physically imposing sort, with a lovely strong, yet athletic top to him. He has super limb strength, which he uses particularly fluently when he walks. He has a great head and eye on him and looks a very kind and genuine horse, in our opinion. The whole team at the sale were especially taken by him as an individual. He reminds us very much, physically, of De Bruyne Horse, who won the Woodcote Stakes for us at Epsom on Derby day 2017, he had pretty much the same look and provenance, when we bought him as a yearling, from Doncaster the year before.
The question he begged was that of pedigree? Richard Hannon Snr, in particular, made a career out of buying, through Peter Doyle (the purchaser of this horse), super looking horses with less than fashionable pedigrees for example, the sires of Toormore (Arakan) or Kool Kompany (Jeremy.) So, it’s of little concern to us, that although there were more fashionably bred horses in the sale, we stand firm in our call, that there were none, that were better looking.
So; here is the perfect Doyle/Hannon/MPR fit!
Please see his walk and profile video in the gallery.
Training Update (21st October): He looks every inch a typical Richard Hannon 2yo. Nicky Tinkler, who is breaking him in, loves him and he singles him out as one of the most ‘natural’ yearlings he has this season. It was interesting to see that Maxios has recently been sold to Coolmore as a National Hunt Stallion, which you would imagine doesn’t bode well for this colt’s chances of becoming a successful Flat racehorse. However, dare we suggest, the last time we purchased a horse by a recently acquired National Hunt stallion, (which in that case was Jeremy), our yearling turned out to be the dual Group 2 winning and Group 1 placed Kool Kompany, now a sire in his own right! Let’s hope lightning strikes twice. We look forward to seeing him on the Hannon gallops at our next stable visit in November.
