Purchased at the Osarus Yearling sale in France, where we purchased BOITRON and TIGRE DU TERRE; this filly is by ORPEN. Read about her sire here: http://www.thenney.com/GB-orpen.php. She is French Owner premiums qualified.
One of our favourite horses of all time at Middleham Park Racing was Collateral Damage, he cost £30,000 and won 10 races for us over 7 seasons to race and earned Racing Post Ratings in excess of 100; he was only the second Middleham Park horse ever to earn that rating. He was by the ever durable sire Orpen who has demonstrated in his many years at stud, the ability to produce tough, yet very talented horses in all departments, be they stalwarts like Collateral Damage or sharp, Champion 2yo fillies such as VORDA.
We pride ourselves at Middleham Park on our "100 Club" horses i.e. those horses that we own and race who are rated 100 or above. It's a figure that's very hard to achieve, yet we regularly have around a dozen horses or so, at any one time, running to this rating or above. Orpen has provided in his career, 29 horses rated 110 or above, let alone the dozens and dozens who have secured membership of the 100 club. He's a fabulous sire. As a rule, his progeny aren't flashy individuals. They tend to be strong and physical without winning beauty contests. Fortunately for progeny of Orpen, there is no prize money allocated for beauty contests; handsome is, as handsome does is the saying in racing and fortunately Orpen imparts plenty of equine talent into his youngsters.
Take our filly for instance; she is bred to be very speedy and Orpen complements the mare particularly well. The mare has already produced 3 individual horses to have won, none having cost a serious amount of money yet they all perform. In our opinion, Orpen is the best stallion the mare has visited. She's still a relatively young mare, having only produced 3 foals of racing age and she now has her very best chance to date.
This filly is a typical Orpen in colour, but not in physique. She has far more quality about her than you would normally expect, she's a stunner and her movement is fabulous (please see a video of her on this page.) She has a super stride on her and from the time we've spent with her, she appears to possess a fantastic temperament too, a vital component in any successful racehorse.
We also believe we have unearthed another bargain, securing her for €25,000 at Osarus in France. We'd anticipated having to pay a fair bit more. The market is not as deep/competitive there and there's often value to be had; Listed winner Boitron cost €45,000 and Tigre Du Terre cost €55,000 and earned a top Timeform of 112, before being sold to Hong Kong.
Syndicate manager update (25th November): Of all the horses we have on our books, she’s the one we’d single out to improve the most, over the Winter. Her 2yo career was a constant battle to keep weight on her, but she looks a million dollars now. She has been placed twice already on the track, however, with a Winter on her back and a slight upping in trip, she could easily become a prolific winner in 2020.
