Karl Burke has enjoyed a fantastic 2017 with his 2yo's, most notably Havana Grey and Unfortunately from a relatively small string. He's won Group 1's, 2's, 3's and Listed races with a variety of his 2yo's, races such as The National Stakes, The Molecombe, The Prix Robert Papin, and 1st and 2nd in The Prix Morny.
By our own admission we have probably sent Karl, in the past, fairly cheap and cheerful individuals with the primary aim being winning small, northern races. Karl has delivered very nicely on that mission but we feel the time is right and that Karl is deservedly afforded the luxury of our sending him a really nice horse or two to train. We can list a vast number of high class individuals at MPR that Richard Fahey, Richard Hannon and David O'Meara have trained for us but we believe we have identified why Karl's name isn't high on the list of good horses trained for Middleham Park. Rest assured, having identified the problem, we believe, with this colt, we have not only addressed the problem but found the solution.
Purchased at the Tattersalls Ireland yearling sale and described by ace bloodstock agent Ross Doyle as; "the nicest colt I've seen here this week" (there were 470 lots at the sale and roughly 60% of them colts) we feel we are very lucky to have secured him. Ross was in fact the underbidder to Karl. We loved the horse too so when Karl struck the successful bid, we approached him to ask if he would train him for us. He very kindly agreed. We asked Ross why he didn't bid on, given that Peter and Ross Doyle are well versed at spending even larger sums than it took for Karl to secure this colt? Ross' reply was that he was buying the horse on spec and that the trainer he had in mind (Richard Hannon) hadn't seen the horse so he felt he had to stop even though he felt the horse would be worth bidding on for. Ironically, if Ross had secured the horse we probably would have agreed to take the horse anyway, for Richard to train, so much did we like this gorgeous son of Gregorian. So, when we suggest we have found the solution, this colt is clearly in the mould of the horses we would send to Richard Hannon, notably Toormore, Kool Kompany, De Bruyne Horse, Esentepe, Tigre Du Terre to name but a few.
His sire GREGORIAN, stands at the National; Stud. You can read his stallion details here: http://www.nationalstud.co.uk/breeding/stallions/gregorian/. Our colt hails from a fabulous family which includes FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND, GLATISANT and SUPERSTAR LEO. His grand dam is the fabulous GAI BULGA no less. Gregorian was a high-class racehorse for John Gosden at distances of around a mile, but he was fully effective at 7f, so brings plenty of speed to this horse's pedigree. The dam (by the fabulous broodmare sire Inchinor) has already produced the winners of 14 races no less, across 4 individual winning horses.
Just for the record, this colt is described in the catalogue as a brown colt!! We are pretty convinced in our mind's eye however, that he is a grey colt. Admittedly a dark grey colt but very much a grey, rather reminiscent of Karl's ace 2017 2yo HAVANA GREY.
Like we say, we think we have found the solution!
Our colt also qualifies for the very lucrative €300,000 Super Auction Sales race (shown above), which is held at the Curragh in September 2018. Only graduates of this year's Tattersalls Ireland Yearling Sale qualify and it's a super incentive to return to Ireland for potentially a bumper pay day.
