Naas - The Irish EBF Ballyhane Stakes
Purchased at the Tattersalls Ireland Yearling sale, this filly is by DANDY MAN. Tattersalls reported "Lot 80: A strong Dandy Man filly catches the bidders' eyes and the Kildallan farm-consigned filly fetches €50,000. She was bought as a foal last autumn by Woodleigh Stables for €25,000. She is a half-sister to one winner and a full-sister to winner Danielsflyer, who was also placed second in the Listed Woodcote Stakes. Her third dam is the former champion Turf filly in the US and the European champion older horse, All Along."

You just can’t go wrong with a Dandy Man filly, especially one who is a full sister to a black type performer, in this instance, Danielsflyer. This filly is also a half-sister to the very fast, very talented and very precocious colt, Concierge. If we have a 2 year old filly who is likely to contest the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot in 2020, then this filly is probably the most likely. We’ve purchased her from the same sale that we purchased our very talented Group 3 Prix Du Calvados winning filly, GREAT PAGE (also trained by Richard.) We’re big believers in the Tattersalls Ireland Sale, having also purchased our Richard Hannon trained Dee Stakes winner VIREN'S ARMY and Group winning MARIE'S DIAMOND from this sale too, and we felt this filly was the joint nicest filly in the sale, alongside an Exceed And Excel filly who we underbid for €90,000.
We were delighted to secure our filly for €50,000, with Archie Watson, who is renowned for eyeing a good 2 year old, underbidding at €48,000. Were pretty sure that this racy looking individual will have a grand career with Richard, if her two, 101 rated siblings are anything to go by.
See her videos in the gallery; she is saddle cloth 21 in the cantering video.
*Entered in The €320,000 Irish EBF Ballyhane Stakes, which is also a Plus 10 Race, to be held at The Curragh on August 3rd. The race also carries a €50,000 bonus for the a Ballyhane Std sire, which of course Dandy Man is!**
2019 season update: Our daughters of DANDY MAN produced these results last year: 3 year old WEDDING DATE (Richard Hannon) - 2 WINS, 1 2nd and 3 3rd PLACES and 2 year old VENTURA FLAME (Keith Dalgleish) - 2 WINS, 2 2nd, and 2 3rd PLACES. Now you see why we have purchased another daughter of the sire -they are tough!
Pedigree update (8th March): A new Grade 1 winner for Dandy Man! "River Boyne came with a strong late run to deny hot favourite Got Stormy on the line and take the Grade 1 Frank E Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita on Saturday. In the process, the Irish ex-pat became the third top-level winner for Ballyhane Stud's flagship stallion Dandy Man after La Pelosa and Peniaphobia." Trainer Update (11th May): Richard reports that she has grown again and turned into a strong fine looking filly. With plenty of size about her she looks like she is primed to cope well with her training regime - something the Hannons are very adept at with fillies. She looks a million dollars and is built like a colt, strong and physically imposing, with fantastic movement. These attributes, combined with her good pedigree, means that she has plenty of boxes ticked!
It's business as usual at Richard's yard and the 2 year old's will continue to canter upsides and be educated ready for their debuts. In the last three or four seasons Richard's 2 year old strategy has changed and the yard send out much fewer 'early' 2 year old sorts. Last year we didn't run a 2 year old in April at all and only one the year before, so this enforced break means that very little has changed for the youngsters.
Richard says in his latest website post: "Business is carrying on pretty much as usual – The horses are still going out every day and we are continuing to prep them for the start of the flat season, whenever that may be. Our staff remain fit and healthy and are continuing with the day to day routine. Our two-year olds have begun working on the grass gallop and will at least have plenty of time to complete their education before they run."
