The purchase of Urban Soldier, is our very first ‘store horse’ with the 12 times Champion Trainer, Paul Nicholls OBE. We’ve had a fair bit of success with Paul with our French, horses in training, imports, notably Red Risk and Oleg, but we thought the excitement of purchasing a horse where we can all be in from the start, to include naming and nurturing him to the track, was too great a temptation to resist!
Paul is renowned and revered for his big, strapping chasers, the list of which is too endless to even begin to cite, so we thought a lovely, chasing type of store horse would be the very best place to start.
Our 4yo gelding, here, by the rising star SOLDIER OF FORTUNE, stands at a mighty 16.3hh, but you’d never guess that, given the way he moves and conducts himself, he’s so easy in the eye and so very fluent in his gaits. We think you’d struggle to find a more imposing individual than this fellow and given he hails from a family packed with Grade 1 & Grade 2 performers, you could be forgiven for beginning to dream of Cheltenham glory, as his career builds towards a Chasing crescendo. He was purchased for us, by ace Bloodstock Agents, Peter and Ross Doyle who have bought the likes of LOSTINTRANSLATION and THE BIG GETAWAY.
He looks a thoroughly imposing and potentially high class prospect for his owners to enjoy over the coming seasons and he’d come highly recommended. Physically and genetically, you get a lot of bang for your bucks with this impressive individual and his size and scope says "chaser" all day long.
We couldn’t be in better hands than the combination of the Doyle’s and Paul Nicholls OBE.
See his profile video here:
Paul says; "He is a lovely horse; very straightforward and switched on - taking all of the work well."
Harry Derham says: "He is a really nice athlete of a horse; quite flash and a nice model. Paul saw him jump and was delighted with him. He has a lot of scope and is a natural jumper - something you cannot teach."
Some of the strides he is seeing in the schooling ring are breath-taking for a horse who hasn’t even seen a course yet. He is the proverbial chaser in the making, but that won’t mean that he won’t give us a lot of fun in the lead up to that career.....
Training Update: He’s a big, athletic horse with bags of scope physically and Paul has given him the time he needs from his big frame. We would be looking at starting him out in a national hunt flat race, or a "bumper" and then look at progressing to novice hurdles so we will be doing plenty of schooling with him as well. At our last owners stable, it's fair to say that he’s left a rather lasting impression. He cantered away lovely but the real impression was made in the school. As you can see from the videos above and in the gallery, he’s a natural at the jumping game.
