Purchased from The Goffs Uk Summer Sale, for £35,000, the thoroughly unexposed 7yo gelding TIMOTEO from the Alan King yard, heads to Ireland, to be trained by the multiple Cheltenham Festival winning trainer GORDON ELLIOTT.
His purchase is rather reminiscent of that of our fantastic Royal Ascot and Cheltenham festival winner JUNIOR. We purchased him as a very unexposed 7yo chaser in 2010 from Alan King for £35,000, the precise purchase price of this horse. Timoteo’s profile has many similarities to that of Junior and also to a recent Gordon Elliott purchase from the Goffs Uk summer sale, Doctor Phoenix, who, once sweetened up by the mercurial Elliott team, was seen winning graded chases and competing at Grade 1 level.
Gordon is renowned for sweetening others’ horses up, beginning, all those years ago, with Silver Birch’s Grand National victory. In keeping with Gordon’s attention to detail, even before purchasing the horse for us, on our behalf, Gordon has already mapped out a campaign for Timoteo. In Gordon’s words, “His campaign will essentially be the Doctor Phoenix route. The graded chases in Ireland contain fabulous prizes money and are usually only contested by 4 or 5 runners.” He’s right, such races carry around €59,000 to the winner. Gordon goes on to say about this horse “he could easily end up a Cheltenham and Aintree Festival horse.”
The previous owners of this horse, the 'Million In Mind Partnership', have it written into their rules that horses are sold at the end of the season; so this horse had to go the the sales this summer. The partnership manager is our good friend Anthony Bromley, of Highflyer Bloodstock, who buys our National Hunt horses for Nicky Henderson OBE. He firmly recommended Timoteo to us, explaining that his last two runs in the Autumn of 2019 were on ground that was too soft, and at a time when the Alan King horses were just a little below par. Then, just when the ground had dried up in the Spring of 2020, he was bouncing and ready to run, when racing closed down due to Covid-19.
Anthony describes Timoteo as “well handicapped over fences”, so there should be plenty more to come in that sphere alone. Timoteo is still a maiden, and thoroughly unexposed over hurdles and he could look ridiculously well handicapped on the Flat too.
Timoteo looks a surefire winner, under possibly 3 different codes, and we can’t wait to get him racing in the Autumn of 2020, with the maestro Gordon Elliott at the helm. He could take us to all the top tracks, on both sides of the Irish Sea. We think he’s a stunning buy!

Trainer Update (22nd November): Gordon was happy with his seasonal 'pipe opener' at Down Royal. He says "I'm hoping he is a horse that might develop into one for some of the decent handicap chases in Ireland over the coming months. He is in good shape and should come on for his stable debut outing at Down Royal (in 5th). We should have a good bit of fun with him and there is a lot of prize money in Ireland for the 2mile/2m 2 chases!" He is ready to go again - there is a valuable handicap chase at Fairyhouse next weekend which Gordon would like to aim Timoteo for.
