The next Anthelia or Cuban Mistress?
In the short time we’ve had horses in training with Rod Millman and his team, we’ve already unearthed two household names together:
1 - Cuban Mistress - St Hugh’s Stakes winner (listed), National Stakes runner-up (listed), Princess Margaret 5th. She was purchased for £26,000 & sold for 170,000Gns, having earned £45,560 along the way in her 2yo career.
2 - Anthelia - Salisbury Conditions winner, National Stakes winner (listed), Weatherbys Super Sprint winner, Dick Poole Stakes winner (Group 3). She was purchased for just £6,000 and has earned £214,164 to date & heads to the December Mares Sale, where, as a Group 3 winner, you’d hope she’d sell for a figure in excess of that of Cuban Mistress.
In Rod we trust - Rod asserts “I don’t try to buy cheap horses, I try to buy nice horses, cheaply”, a mantra that has served him so well over the years - Betty’s Hope, Lord Kintyre, a further two to add to the above fillies’ list.
Rather breaking Rod’s typical purchasing mould, Rod had been afforded a sizeable order from a new owner from the Tattersalls Ireland yearling sale.
Rod and his ace family team drew up a shortlist of four horses that fit the bill for that order. This filly was one of those four. It’s fair to say that the apple of the team’s eye, i.e. top of the list, was a Good Guess filly out of a black-type mare coming up later in the day. After careful consideration, the team decided to wait for that filly later in the sale, and not to bid on this particular filly, therefore. However, when this filly was led out unsold at €17,000, team Millman pounced and bought her ‘on spec’ for €13,000 rather than allocate her to the larger order - you’d have to assert that, in Rod’s opinion, she represents outstanding value
Rod - “She was on my ‘very sizeable middle market order list, so you can see how much we all liked her. Fortunately, we managed to purchase the Good Guess filly too for €50,000, so all’s well that ends well.”

Knowing Rod, she’ll be ready ahead of her pedigree, i.e., effective over 5f in the Spring and early summer, however flourishing into an even better horse over 6f & 7f as her 2yo season progresses.
Shrewdly bought by Rod and the team. Rod was very keen to keep a share, and hopefully we can ALL benefit in the long term - Cuban Mistress & Anthelia style.
