Purchased at the Tattersalls Book 2 sale, this colt is by SEA THE MOON:

Sea The Moon, a son of the great Sea The Stars, looks to be a rising star of the stallion ranks. Ever since his 11 lengths demolition of his rivals in the German Derby 2014, he’s been firmly established as a top class individual, and from his fabulous stats as a sire, he looks to be passing on his prowess to the next generation. Given he was a progressive 3yo and his progeny are bred for middle distances it’s rather surprising that, given his eldest progeny are still only 3yo’s, he has a massive 13% of Black Type horses to runners. This means that 13% of his runners are rated roughly 100 or above. It’s a percentage figure that can only be matched by the likes of Galileo and No Nay Never. We’re pretty sure that Sea The Moon, rather like his father, could be heading for a stellar career at stud.

Combine this prowess with that of the stamina laden mare NOTA BENE, who hails from the family of 24 Group or listed performers and we could be onto something here. Nota Bene has already produced NOT AFTER HOURS, a black type, two time winner, by the virtually unheard of stallion Wiener Waltzer. In visiting Sea The Moon, she could be about to deliver something a little special; or at least that’s what we are hoping.

From his initial video, you can see this colt is a fabulous mover, and he’s quite an athlete when he stands too. He looks a fabulous blend of pedigree and individual and given David’s superb ability to eke out every last drop of potential from his horses, whatever their level of ability, this colt shapes like a hugely exciting recruit to our Newmarket training ranks.

We are already looking forward for him to start his progressive career journey in 2020, which could culminate in becoming yet another of Sea The Moon’s black type horses.

Media update (20th April): Kevin Blake's column for At The Races, says the following about Sea The Moon: "Another sire that is even lower down the nomination fee scale that warrants mention amongst this exceptional crop of stallions is SEA THE MOON. Standing at Lanwades Stud in Newmarket for £15,000 throughout his stud career, Sea The Moon has had smaller numerical representation thus far compared to the other sires at the top of the above table, but his 100 or so runners have fared very well indeed.

As well as siring the likes of PondusQuest The Moon and Enjoy The Moon in his first crop, he also enjoyed notable success with his second crop of juveniles last season, with Alpine Star winning the Group 2 Debutante Stakes at the Curragh and Wonderful Moon winning a Group 3 at Krefeld in Germany by 12 lengths.

Being a German Derby winner that is by Sea The Stars and out of a Monsun full-sister to two German Derby winners, Sea The Moon’s progeny can be expected to progress with age and build on the fine start they have made thus far. He looks to represent excellent value at £15,000." See the full article here:

An article in the TDN (Thoroughbred Daily News) is worth a read also, as Sea The Moon was selected as a 'rising star':

Trainer update: We are delighted to welcome William Knight to the MPR trainers' roster. David (Lanigan) and William had an extended handover at Rathmoy Stables, before David's move to the USA in April. This means that they have been able to go through all the horses in training at Rathmoy together and this has meant a very smooth handover.

This colt is going well with his education, now going up the grass gallops (a video is included below) having been upsides. He is a lovely mover who is clean of wind and gets up Warren Hill very easily. He has a lot of scope and is a nice strong colt and should give his owners some fun in the summer.

Here he is on the grass for the first time (sitting in 3rd):
