ALMANZOR EX WATCHFUL COLT:

HALF BROTHER TO THE DUAL GROUP 1 WINNER WATCH ME

To be trained by John and Thady Gosden.

Purchased at the Arqana Deauville August Sale. Read the Racing Post story from the sale here: https://www.racingpost.com/bloodstock/sales-news/thrilled-palin-leaves-arqana-with-big-dreams-after-securing-almanzor-colt/573462 (written prior to the appointment of John and Thady as his trainers.)

Sire: ALMANZOR. Dam: WATCHFUL, by Galileo and half-brother to the dual Group 1 winner WATCH ME:

We are so thrilled to have managed to source this fabulous son of Almanzor (The Champion European 3yo colt of 2016) out of a Group 1 producing Galileo mare, the dam of the Group 1 Coronation Stakes and Group 1 Prix Rothschild winner WATCH ME (by Olympic Glory), to be trained by John and Thady Gosden. The colt is FRENCH OWNER PREMIUMS QUALIFIED.

See his profile video here:

Plan A: The Epsom Derby 2024, with most probably 2 or 3 runs as a 2yo in 2023 & a prep run in a Derby Trial 2024 - then on to the Epsom showpiece in June.

Plan B: Given Plan A cannot be guaranteed at this early stage, we’d have a Plan B in place too. This would involve racing at levels just below those stipulated above e.g., listed and Group races and perhaps Royal Ascot handicaps as a 3yo if he’s only capable of running to marks between 95-105.

He is FRENCH OWNER PREMIUMS QUALIFIED too of course, so a trip across the channel would be an option and that could be for the French Derby of course!

Plan C: Given plans A & B cannot be guaranteed at this stage, Plan C would involve qualifying for and racing in Saturday and Festival handicaps off handicaps marks in the 80’s & 90’s over middle distances as a 3yo. These are precisely the sorts of horses that are attractive to oversees clients e.g., Australia and Hong Kong. Horses in these sorts of ratings brackets tend to sell on for £150,000 - £250,000 abroad. He’s a lovely strapping horse, 16hh already, so he’s perfect for sale to these sorts of racing jurisdictions in such an instance.

Plan D: There’s just a chance we haven’t covered the level of his future performances yet, in outlining the above plans, and in the unlikely, but perfectly possible event that he’s a notch down on any of the above plans, he could be either sold to, or transferred to the National Hunt code. His size, presence and scope for improvement could sit perfectly well for a move to, say, Nicky Henderson’s Seven Barrows at the end of his 3yo career and ply his trade over timber. Pentland Hills was rated 78 on the Flat, moved to Seven Barrows at the end of his 3yo Flat career and went on to win the Triumph Hurdle at The Cheltenham Festival as a 4yo in the Spring. This move could be for the existing syndicate of our horse, a slightly revamped one, or he could be sold to go jumping, rated in the 70’s on the Flat, for figures ranging anything between £35,000-£100,000
