We are delighted to welcome Richard Spencer to Middleham Park Racing, with a striking colt by REQUINTO, purchased at the Tattersalls Ireland yearling sale. He trains RAJASINGHE, who we were under bidders for at Goffs this time last year, so feel our partnership is full of promise!
Richard has worked in racing for the last 10 years, with his first position at Peter Bowens in west Wales. He moved to Barry Hills in 2006, and continued as pupil assistant with Charlie Hills. Whilst with Hills, Richard gained valuable experience including travelling horses to run overseas. In 2010 he was responsible for Prime Defender when running in Dubai, Deauville and at Longchamp. Richard was also responsible for breaking in their crop of yearlings each year.
At the end of 2012 Richard moved from Lambourn to Newmarket and spent two years as assistant to Michael Bell at Fitzroy House. Richard joined Rebel Racing at Albert House Stables at the end of 2015 and took up the position of Trainer when his licence was awarded at the end of March 2016.
An accomplished race rider, having ridden 25 winners over Point-to-Point, he also rode under rules as an amateur, with notable wins in the Hunter Chase at Ascot in 2014 and the Royal Artillery Gold Cup at Sandown in 2012. Richard was placed 3rd in the Amateur Riders Handicap at Doncaster, riding for Her Majesty The Queen.
Situated on Newmarket’s prestigious Bury Road, the historic Sefton Lodge Stables was purchased by Phil Cunningham in early 2018. The 47 box facility is accompanied by a lavish mansion, and has a yard that directly adjoins the much sought after Bury Side training grounds. Sefton Lodge was in the hands of the Joel family for much of the last century, and then Charles St George, during which time Michelozzo, winner of the 1989 St Leger, was housed there.
The acquisition Sefton Lodge has allowed Richard to expand and it has been a very lucky yard for everyone who has trained there.
